Beech seedlings always look like they belong to some much more exotic plant. The hawthorn branches look stylised and remind me of Chinese ink paintings I’ve seen. I always look for faces in these patterns on the rotting logs – perhaps because they have the flat colours and sharp edges of cartoons..
